Re: [RC] Re: FYI - Magnumsmom
Rob brings up the Dairy industry.
Yes, let's talk about the Dairy industry where the few
Holstein bulls who have been selected over the years
only for total milk production are up in the 4000 pound
range. Holstein dairy bulls are the number one killers
causing more deaths each year than any other single
animal. Why? Well, the haven't been selected for
temperment at all, have they? The few Holstein dairy
bulls who are worth tons of $$$ could also be placed
into the road side freak attraction category.
Anyone remember the Jerry Lewis movie with Cuddles the
Hereford bull? What a cutie that Cuddles was!, and
docile as a lamb.
Holstiens have been selected so heavily for total milk
production that their milk is down to 2 - 2.5% butter
fat or less instead of the rich 4-4.5% butter fat of a
nice pretty Jersey. Anyone wonder why our supermarkets
started selling 1% milk a few years ago? And it's being
pawned off on us as "more healthy". More like, more water.
Rob, what's happened to the genetic pool of the Holsteins
in this country? Fortunately, when the Holsteins colapse,
there will still be the Europeans with their lines of Guernsey's and Jersey's. I've heard there is nothing here
like the butter and cheeses of Europe.
Actually Rob, you contradict yourself in your email. You
start off by saying it's a good idea, and then end by
being concerned about the narrowing of the genetic pool.
So what do you really think?
