It also brings up the issue of the erythroblastosis fetalis problem that
seems to run in some Arab bloodlines. For those of you that aren't familiar
with this problem, it's the technical term for Blue Baby syndrome (the Rh
factor problem) in humans. I'm not exactly sure what protein is involved in
horses, but mares develop antibodies to a particular protein on the
stallion's red blood cells, which is frequently inherited by the foal. The
mare's body puts these antibodies into the colostrum, so that what should be
life-saving ends up being deadly unless the foal is given serum and
prevented from nursing for at least 24 hours. I've been on the treatment
end of a number of these foals because the Arab stallion in grad school
carried that gene and several mares reacted to it. We weren't able to save
all the foals.
This sounds like another name for neonatal isoerythrolysis, and it is by no
means limited to Arabian horses. It is a possibility with any foaling of
most breeds, be it ET or otherwise.
