And, I might add, that bats are the only animal in some areas, ie. Washington
state, that have been found to be rabid. I work for a local health
department, and in Washington State about one in 10 bats that is tested is
rabid, and it's estimated from those results that probably one in 100 bats in
the wild is rabid. It's amazing how many otherwise intelligent people will
pick up a bat that they find in their house and then of course we have to
test it, because there is human contact.
One thing I learned about bats is that if for some reason they end up on the
ground, they can't just fly off like a bird, they have to climb up on
something to swoop off. So if you see a bat on the ground, it may be sick,
or it may have just gotten stuck down there for some reason, and is trying to
figure out how to get airborne again. jeri
