Someone recently told me that she puts her suede half chaps in the washing machine when they get crusty. I tried this (hey, what's to loose?) and they came out GREAT! I used just the tiniest dash of Woolite. I didn't condition them, just let them dry slowly. They were actually still damp the first time I put them on; I think they fit better having dried on my legs. Next time I might try a dash of liquid saddle soap instead of Woolite. The usual disclaimers apply!
