[RC] What are the True Costs of Putting on a Ride? - goearth

This Cost per mile has me thinking again.  What are the 'True Costs' per mile?  Not even taking into consideration Time put into planning you would have to charge at least $5 per mile to make a profit.  But take into consideration the inherant risks involved and how do you prorate that?  When i was a first time RM it was a Governor declared State of Emergency and the VA. National Guard had to send a BlackHawk Helicopter to lift the horse off Kennedys Peak during the Ft. Valley Ride sponsored by the OD.  Who paid for that?  i don't know.  the OD didn't.  But, what if they did and how much would that have cost?  Personally,  i think the RM's are the understated Heros in this Sport.  The Jockeys get to come in and have fun on their steeds, but it is the RM (usually with a few helpers before the ride and MANY More the day of)that has done all the work to get the ride to that point and then have to put everything away and pull ribbons and send thank yous and soothe ruffled feathers.  The Riders gripe because the stream was washed out,  or someone pulled down the markers or the pasta was not cooked perfectly....  If more of you took on the tasks of being a RM you would cut them some slack and give them understanding to the plights they encounter you have NO idea of ,and you may then charge $5 per mile or more.  tom sites
