Fw: [RC] Affording a Horse - Kathy & Mike Kelly
I've got to laugh when anyone assumes I'm saving $ keeping my horses
barefoot and trimming them myself weekly.
I still have a CSHS come and trim once every 3-4 weeks, which runs from
between $50-$70 per visit. Of course I had to buy all of my own trimming
supplies, many of which wear out and need to be replaced. My horses have
more "shoes" than I do (soaking boots and boots for riding when needed),
and
they aren't cheap. I don't even want to begin to think of the time I spend
on hoofcare, which was almost zilch when they were shod (OK, I did pick
their hooves out and hold the horses for the shoer......) and now there is
daily soaking, weekly trimming, and making sure they get enough exercise.
> I chose to keep them barefoot and trim myself because I believe its what
is
> best for them. I also hire a professional to make sure I'm getting things
> right and help me to continue to learn. It would cost less in both time
and
> $ to shoe them.
