[RC] Preventing Saddle Theft - Maureen A. Fager
Hi All,
I was sorry to hear from the poster who reported having so many saddles
stolen! I hope she is able to recover at least some of them. I have
thought about this issue and occasionally have taken steps to prevent theft.
Primarilly have used bicycle lock technology-ie; the cables and U-locks
and sometimes padlocks to secure my saddles. This is easy to use if you
have a western type saddle as the opening below the pommel makes it easy to
use the cables. English type saddles are a little more difficult. Locks
and cables can be used in tack rooms and trailers.
Here is a link to Jessica Jahiel's website. She has an excellent article in
the archives about how to mark you tack to identify it if it is stolen. Go
to the archives and then to the "Tack and Equipment" section and look for it
there. She has many articles about many topics in her archives and they are
excellent. Check her out!!

Last year someone had a saddle stolen from a vet check at Tevis!
Unfortunately, saddles and tack are frequently stolen, and I think marking
and securing them (yes it's a pain!) are good steps in preventing theft.
Happy Trails,
Maureen
