You can trot on pavement, but you should train for it before the ride.
Start out with short stretches of pavement and gradually increase the
length. Be very sure to allow off-days between days you trot on
pavement, for recovery from the training.
The same principle applies to trotting downhill. It is important to
train trotting downhill, a little at a time at first and gradually
increasing the amount and speed. Then you can trot downhill on rides
without harm.
