Re: [RC] Keeping shoes on horses - Rob
I don't understand the aversion to steel shoes. The main reason for
shoeing a horse is when the rate of hoof wear exceeds the rate of hoof
growth. The shock absorber is the hoof, the mechanism for dispersing the
impact is there within the hoof capsule. If a steel shoe is properly
applied, that mechanism still functions properly. Pads will however help
with softening impacts on the sole from collisions with rocks.. Screws
won't hold a shoe on for very long, (I know because I've tried several
different methods) nails are driven through the hoofwall and then
clinched. Forming a hook that holds the shoe tight against the hoof.
Screws will eventually work loose due to the shearing forces upon them
as the hoof strikes the ground.
