Seems pretty simple--a start of a ride is a physical point, like a finish.
Before that point, one has not started. After that point, one has. Just as
one defines a finish line as a physical line, where, once crossed, one has
    finished the course.

Because of the nature of multidays, it is nice to be able to get on and get
"lined out" on the trail before making a decision. This works well both for
riders and for ride vets, because the vets can visualize the ongoing horses
in motion. Hence, when vetting and managing multidays, I always liked to
see the "starting line" about 200 yards or so out of camp. But it was still
defined as a definite point, and the riders knew they had crossed the line
when they passed the ride vet observing the start.
