I trim all 3 of my horses about once a week.
I keep them barefoot and trim a little frequently to keep them as close to
"right" as I can. I have been doing this for about a year with
success. It is work, but I get alot of satisfaction from being able to
care for my horses myself, and see the positive results.
I do have a professional (Certified Strasser
Hoofcare Specialist) come once every 4 weeks. He checks my work, helps me
improve my skills, and also trims one of my horses who is still rehabing from
seriously contracted hooves (he was this way when I bought him, and his
increasing lameness is what brought me to keep him barefoot and learn to
trim.) I also trim this horse, but he is much more difficult since his
hooves have been so badly deformed.
I have gone from knowing nothing about hooves to
learning more every week. I highly recommend attending/participating
in a hoof dissection if you ever get the chance. Martha Olivo is the
master at this, and is supposed to have a video available soon of a hoof
dissection.
I think that most anyone could learn to trim their
horses themselves, especially if they have someone who knows what they are doing
to help them learn.
