[RC] Tapeworms - sharp penny
This issue of Horse and Rider (July) adresses tapeworms
in relation to causing colic. They say you have basically 3
options for controling tapeworms:
1. give pyrantel pamoate (strongid p or t, or rotectin ll)
at 2xs normal dose, 2 days in a row
2. give pyrantel tartrate (strongid c or c2x) at 10xs
normal dose 2 days in a row
3. give an oral dose of canine tapeworm medication,
praziquantel (Droncit) available from your vet.
Options 1 & 2 replaces your horses reg deworming treatments
in spring and fall. The Droncit is given in addition to the
reg drworming treatmants but on a different day to avoid
possible drug interactions.
The article also says that there is better than a 50%
chance that your horse is already infested with the
parasite!
Regards,
Penny
