Truman stated:
"The supplement industry
cannot claim that their supplement in fact does such and such."
Actually, at least as far as the state livestock feed laws are concerned,
that may or may not be the case. Some restrict the restrictions (say that
five times real fast) on claims to the labels only while some are much
tougher, including restrictions on oral claims by sales people and claims in
marketing aids and ads. The rest of the states are somewhere inbetween.
It doesn't stop the human supplement market, either. One company is
claiming that their products can reverse multiple sclerosis, and also the
same products can replace Ritalin in children with ADHD (makes no difference
whether the type of ADHD is controllable with nutrition, either). Oh, and
it should be noted that to get the full effect one must use MULTIPLE
products....which of course end up costing far more than the drug treatments
for each disorder. To further complicate the issue, the people doing the
selling are not trained in nutrition or medicine but are simply
regurgitating whatever the current line of BS the company is pushing, which
is usually made up of a few true nutritional facts surrounded by so much
manure they ought to be subject to a nutrient management plan.
True story that turned up today on a local tv station's website: People in
Alabama swear by manure tea as an herbal remedy for colds. How healthy can
that be? Yet this sort of stuff can be marketed because there is nothing to
stop them.
In essence, there are a lot of modern day alchemists out there, except
instead of turning lead into gold they're turning cheap nutrients (and often
dangerous compounds) and hype into cash for themselves.
