The problem I see in LD is the mixture of people (& horses) just getting
started (who usually do not have the knowledge base to race safely) with
those of more experience who ARE capable of it if they wish. AERC/Endurance
needs a training ground for people to get started. It's hard to tell
someone who shows up at a ride to take it slow till they learn the ropes
when they see others (in their distance) flying down the trail. This is part
of where the "treated second class" & hurt feelings get started.
I honestly don't have a very good solution.
Increasing the age requirements for the horses takes limited distance just
another step farther from the "training ride" concept, with nothing in sight
to take it's place.
One of the things that has drawn many people to the sport is the simplicity
of it all. I hope we don't continue to classify ourselves to death.
