[RC] Judging people/leaving after - Rides 2 Far

     >>sometimes you have to go to a few rides
    > > I've been> wrong about riders out of ignorance

I've done this myself. Most memorable example...first time I rode with
Lawton Johnston. I didn't know who he was and when I asked him questions
he totally ignored me. Found out later her was very hard of
    hearing...nicest man in the world.

Over the years I've seen several riders who at their first ride looked
like "future bad apples". Many were just ignorant, learned fast, and are
excellent endurance riders now. A good vet's helpful words get most of
them headed in the right direction. The next step is when they realize
they can learn from the other riders.

If I can spot one of these early I try to talk to them the night before.
Last year at a ride I was camped next to a couple of women who looked
promising. They thought they were just there to "pleasure ride" the
25...their husband thought he was going to be spending the day in a
lounge chair. Their horses looked very fit. We had a talk and I told
them "If your horses happen to grow fangs and you end up going fast,...
and we talked electrolytes cooling, etc. I warned the husband he could
forget lounging. He was going to wish he had four arms. He told me the
next day I had called it dead on and the advice had helped a lot.
