Cindy,
I am not a beginner, or a wimp.
What I abhore is using UNNECESSARILY ABUSIVE (from the horses standpoint)
trail for the purpose of "slowing people down."
Some people are having trouble grasping the difference.
Example:
Where I put on my ride the rocks are sharp, not the worn smooth kind.
I have known horses to actually puncture their feet on them. It is necessary
to use some of the dry creekbeds containing this rock as part of the trail.
Yep, it slows the concientious riders down. Most riders planning to ride
faster opt for pads or EZ boots.
BUT, I only use short sections of this type of trail where I need too in
order to access something better. (Well, somewhat better). I COULD run the
trail right down them for miles. This would be punishing the horse for what
reason? Just because it's there? I'd rather let the riders take
responsibility for rating their horses in the hills without trying to
cripple them! Training & conditioning can prepare a horse for the hills, and
technical trails. Some hazards are negotiated by the luck of the draw, and I
prefer not to throw them at riders unnecessarily.

all of you, of course) whine about tough, "ankle breaking" trails. The
sport was founded on Tevis, the Old Dominion, the Big Horn 100, Virginia
City 100, etc. It was never supposed to be for whimps. I didn't make the
