and bless you for tackling the issue...I get tired of horses always being
the last to benefit from new discoveries!
I agree that the phrenic nerve's role in thumps is a critical difference
between this problem in horses and lactational tetany in cattle. That's why
I wondered if the focus on calcium to what appeared to be the exclusion of
the high potassium in alfalfa in the comments by the vet in the original
question might be jumping the gun. When you look at the roles of each of
the electrolytes in muscle contraction, nerves firing, and acid-base
balance, you have to look at them all in relation to one another rather than
singling each one out separately. This is probably the best example of
minerals not working exclusively of one another that exists, IMO.
