Postscript to this--on such rides, when a horse was at all marginal
post-ride at such rides, the FIRST thing we did as ride vets was to suggest
that they pack up and get the heck out of there before the sun went down and
the temps plummetted. Have helped several riders with a long way to travel
and who had intended to stay to find overnight accommodations a couple of
hours away where they could get their horses out of the chill.
