Re: [RC] protecting horses - Truman Prevatt
Temps are one thing, but the pulse is a number which is pretty easy to
get accurately - especially with the hand held units. You meet a
specific number in a fixed time or you don't go on. Pretty black and
white. How does that determination require a vet - there is no
judgement? You either meet the pulse or you don't.
Normally from my experience from taking pulses at many rides is the
horses that don't make it in 30 minutes are not even close to the
parameters and there is no question about accuracy.

I have a bit of a problem with purposely putting in too much tough
(ankle breaker type) trail to force horses to walk. The people who
aren't concerned about their horses often go too fast there also, or
just run all out where they can. And, it forces the conservative
riders to go faster than they'd like on the good parts.
Monte says just take a ball bat to the riders!
I agree taking temps is a good idea. Were they going to pull horses at
Malibu that stayed at 103 for 30 minutes?
Since AERC has no training criteria/standards for lay people to judge
rides I think it would behoove a ride manager to make sure there is a
vet present at any stops where a horse may prevented from continueing
due to pulse or temp issues. I think it could be argued that those are
veterinary parameters and a rider would have the right to have a
veterinarian confirm the count when elimination was at at stake.
