[RC] fly control study - LOUISE D BURTON
Here are the results of my great fly control study with EQUISPOT and
FREEDOM. We live in major tick country (I have to pick ticks off everyday)
and huge horseflies, green headed flies, and deerflies, along with those
pesky little flies than hang out on their back and stomach.
Horse A & B FREEDOM
Horse C & D Equispot
Horse E, F, G, H, I, J nothing.
At 8 days horse A and B and D have no ticks and no little flies. No deer
flies behind their ears. Green headed ones don't seem to be as bad, esp on
the ride yesterday with horse E, who was getting many more green heads.
Horse C had two ticks in her mane, otherwise she was the same as A, B, D.
Horse E had 8 ticks, and horse F had six ticks, horse G had two ticks.
Horses I and H are not in the same pasture and don't usually get ticks
anyway. The little flies are terrible on horses H and J. Horse H is just
bloody with green heads, as is horse G. Horse F is rarely bothered with
flies anyway (her skin is actually cool to the touch..another study...I will
try to keep this to two variables).
Without writing a paper (you can tell I've been doing labs for two weeks
straight) the conclusion is this:
No discernable difference between the brands.
Definitely works on ticks and small flies. Helps with green heads, deer
flies, and possibly horse flies.
Why the different horses? Horse I and H are nursing mares. Horse J is 24
and not in good health, horse G we are trying to get in foal, and horse F
rarely has flies. I am hesitant to put such large concentrations of
pesticides on these horses.
I hope this wasn't totally confusing......
