Re: [RC] MARE research - Lisa Redmond

I haven't located the article yet, but something from endurance.net caught
my eye, and along with another study I just scanned it jogged my brain back
into gear--perhaps the reasoning behind the potassium-free recommendation
was that potassium is so high and variable in feedstuffs, especially
forages. It's the bane of a dairy nutritionist's existence when dealing
with transition cows--we want low potassium in their diets, and it's next to
impossible to find hay that's low potassium.

I've been seeing potassium levels in both grass and alfalfa hay samples from
Pennsylvania recently that are probably characteristic of values seen in
Virginia. The second article I saw (I've bookmarked it to study it more
later--when I have paper for my printer!) suggested that exercise can induce
a temporary spike in blood potassium levels...so I have to wonder if perhaps
Hoffman's research group is reacting to that spike by making their
    recommendation.

If I could find an email link for Dr. Hoffman, I'm going to see if she'll
send me that research report. I now have more questions than I did before I
    started searching for the article!

    Lisa
