RE: [RC] Maalox - Mike Sofen
The current research has shown that unless you are dosing at least NINE
OUNCES of an antacid (in one dose), it has essentially zero affect on equine
stomach acid. That would be about 5 syringes worth of powder, and it lasts
maybe an hour or two. The research has clearly shown that stomach ph
doesn't change significantly until a threshold dose is administered. There
is essentially no way to prevent an equine ulcer using an antacid.
If you need to reduce stomach acid, you should use a drug like Famotadine,
of which one dose will fit in a syringe and lasts 24 hours. But then you'll
be in violation of the AERC drug rule.

I believe that Kentucky Research said that Malox was not a good
mixture with electrolytes for some reason. Anyone know what that
is? I am now being told to give Malox with electrolytes to help
prevent ulcers. Will this ever end??
