[RC] Fw: [PNER] Mt. Adams - Stephanie Irving
For those interested here are some comments from the PNER list regarding the
recent Mt. Adams ride, the pre-ride for the Pan American 2003 (September 13,
2003). Official results will be posted on our website
www.endurance.net/mtadams by the end of the week (the ones there at the
moment are last years). Please be patient, we're trying to catch up on our
day jobs which have been neglected over the past few weeks! I'll alert you
as soon as they're up.

I second all that Dory raved about. Chris Neilsen and Stephanie Irving
OUTDID
themselves this year!
I didn't get to ride this year, but I did get the privelege of crewing for
the best good people in my world! Congrats to MY KID, Jessi, and her wonder
horse, MC Isaac, who finished their first FEI 100 miler in record time! (in
the neighborhood of 15.5 hrs riding time, BIG THANKS to Julie Barnfather for
sponsoring them!!) They have never looked better after any long distance
ride they've done. Jessi has always felt that Mt. Adams is "her" ride. My
other "designated kid", Mariah Derrick, took first jr and jr BC in the 50,
with Terry Ross sponsoring them. Terry's daughter, Louisa, finished her
first 75 with another great jr in tow, Morgan Mittie. Jo Whitlow was keeping
them company completing her first 75. Hey Jo, my offer still stands for that
great horse of yours! :-)
All our horses loved the trails and looked good after the ride. In fact, I
didn't see too many sad cases this weekend. The weather was perfect, the
trails were well marked, there was tons of water available out there and the
prizes made lots of happy faces!
It was great seeing people from so many places. Stephen and Dinah Rojek were
there, as was Darolyn Butler, Bev Gray, and several others. Our NW riders
did
great. I didn't see very many pulls, which was phenominal considering there
were so many riders. Think there was something like nearly 40 in the 100, 60
some in the 50, 75 had something like 14, and the 25 had over 50 riders.
Huge
ride!! Jess says something like 270 total riders.
Again, KUDOS to Steph and Chris and their Huge Crew of help, for putting on
an incredible Mt. Adams ride! It's shaping up to be one great Pan American
Championship in 2003!

Greetings Friends:
It was a fantastic ride. Indeed, this ride defies all superlatives. Every
year it gets better. If I had to pinpoint one thing I liked the best about
this ride, it would be the trails - beautiful dirt trails winding through
pine forests; spectacular views of Mt. Adams, Mt. Hood and the expansive,
green valley floor below. Ascents and descents were gradual and deceptive,
climbing to a maximum elevation of 3,800 ft. was realized only when you saw
the view of the lowlands below. Lots of riders - riders came from Virginia,
Vermont, Texas, New Mexico, California and Canada. At ride meeting time
there were 189 recorded entrants; I haven't calculated the final count yet
since rigs continued to arrive during the night as well as in the early
morning for the shorter distance rides. As usual, great management,
vetting,
P & R help, officiating by the FEI officials; food served by the Troutlake
High School band, breakfast donuts, bagels and coffee offered the next
morning. Vendor Animal Tacker from Texas gave out free t-shirts! And ride
t-shirts as awards for every completion.
First place on the 100 miler with a ride time of 11:20 hours was Alexandra
Luck, a junior from New Mexico, riding with Marcia Smith. Best Condition
was
taken by Flash Gordon with an amazing vet score of 754.1 ridden by 5th place
Patty Murray and a ride time of 11:36 hours. 75 miles was won by Darla
Westlake with a ride time of 9:24 hours; she also got BC. 50 miles was won
by Sue Nance with a ride time of 5:25 hours; BC went to Sharon Westergard.
25 miles was won by Sara Miller with a ride time of 2:31 hours. Best
Condition went to 7th place Mary Sparkles.
I rode my half quarter horse, half arab mare, Canyon. She surpassed my
expectations this weekend and I was so proud of her. What a great ride she
is; I always enjoy riding her but worry everytime because she's a big girl
and doesn't usually do well in the heat. It eventually got warm on ride
day,
but there was always a breeze; no, a wind, throughout the day to keep us
comfortable. My ride partner, Cheryl Conklin, and I saw a coyote shortly
after leaving the Pipeline vet check. A rare treat to be sure! He looked
mighty confused though . . . . .
Canyon and I completed in 45th place with an approximate ride time of 9
hours. The course was different this year making it more interesting for
those of us who rode last year. No one had to repeat any loops! How often
does that happen? Even the 100 milers.
My thanks to Chris Nielsen and Stephanie Irving, et al, for a job well done.
We will miss this ride next year since the 2003 FEI ride will be at this
location on September 13th. As Chris said at the ride meeting, asking her
volunteers to repeat this task twice in one ride season is asking too much.
I will miss this ride next year, however, it will give us a chance to
volunteer to still be part of the experience.
And last but not least, special thanks to my sister, Jane Wilken, for taking
care of the rest of my animals back home whenever I travel.

Chris & her staff did a great job of handling a huge number of
riders, who turned out for one of the most beautiful rides in the
Northwest. My riding partner Liz Dale rode her bay mare Khitten - 22
years young, to a 15th place finish in the 50!
Flash Gordon's trot out at BC was a thrill to watch. Pat is a lucky
woman to ride such a magnificent animal. What a wonderful example of
a Great Endurance Horse!
Thanks to everyone for a super weekend!

Thanks Dory! It was a great ride. A special thanks to Sharon Westergard for
teaching me how to foam on easy boots.
For anyone interested Hummer went 100 miles barefoot in the hind end with
foamed on easyboots. We removed the heel straps. One boot even broke the
cable at 20 miles and I had the farrier just cut the whole cable part off.
Those boots weren't going anywhere.
The NW is really pumped now about the Pan Am. We will need lots of
volunteers so anyone interested please contact Chris or Steph. I am in
charge of awards so anyone interested in donating in that department please
get a hold of me.

Yeah, you can. I just thought I heard them say she was riding as a senior
at
the awards. If you are at least 14 years old and have at least 500 miles,
you can request a certificate stating you as a senior from a commitee
(AERC?). That's what I'm doing next year.
