Re: [RC] Splints and riding endurance - Rae Callaway

The splint ligament separated.  She's got a little nob on the side of her cannon that was pretty painful to the touch a couple of days after it happened.  My vet?  She's ok, but knows nothing of endurance (or reproduction, either as my two surprise fillies can attest!  She checked both mares last spring and said neither was pregnant - and this was at 30 days!)

If it was caused by hitting her leg with her hoof while playing, I would think she will be fine.  If it's caused by stress on the cannon bone because of conformation, that's a whole different ball game.  Is it a real splint as in a fracture, or did the splint ligament separate from the bone? Is it a slight tear in the splint ligament because of trauma (which is what it sounds like).? See, we call a lot of things "splints." I see tons of horses with splints in endurance, and yours sounds minor.  Your vet will be the best judge, but it sounds promising.
