Laurie,
Three days before my first LD (two weeks after my first
comp ride), I twisted an ankle and tore it up bad enough that I needed an air
cast. I told my doctor to do what she had to do because I was going to
ride anyway! I went to the ride, wore my air cast (had to wear tennis
shoes rather than my accustomed boots) and partway through the comp ride
was stung by a ground bee. The next day I wrapped both ankles and
rode the LD anyway (very fast through the area with the ground bees....to this
day, I get sweats riding through that part of the trail!). I knew then it
was an addiction without cure! I've since ridden with a rib out of place
(do not recommend...wouldn't do it again either!) and with various other
ailments... won BC on an LD one year just one week after having pneumonia.
Have never had so much oxygen in my lungs as I did that day! But I KNEW I
couldn't do the 50. So, go ride anyway...it'll just toughen you up for the
big time! :)
