Hi Tracy
There is a difference between
endurance in the states and in South Africa.
On all 80km (50mile) rides, and the
shorter distances, riders leave in groups of their own choice (Normally about 6
-10 horses) at 5 min intervals. One gets to choose who you leave
with, and I have always been lucky and left with friends who have well
mannered horses like mine. I ride a stallion, my son rides a pony mare who
is very flirty with him and have never had a problem, as you say, trainning and
manners begin at home.
The only time that there is a
mass start is at a 100 miler (160km) and at that level there are or should
not be any green or unschooled horses.
So Tracy, if you would like to
try endurance here in SA give me a call, I have well schooled, well conditioned
experienced horses that you could try your first endurance ride on :-)
Then you can tell these guys that you have done it, and done it long distance
;-)
