    I reallllllllly have to disagree with your NATRC comment.  I think the 2-day 60 mile format of an  Open division NATRC ride works extremely well to condition a horse for endurance both mentally and physically.  The speed of an Open ride ends up being roughly the speed you need to go to finish the Tevis (not to top ten it, but to finish it).  I think NATRC encourages building horses with MINDS and BODIES. NATRC also teaches you how to pace a horse and put the least amount of stress on him.  

    Sylvia & Harca (almost 3,000 NATRC miles and 2,000 AERC -- 6 Tevis finishes plus a bunch of other scary rides <g>  -- STARTED in NATRC)
