Because of the problem with losing the little caps, I prefer the squirt
bottle method. But then again I'm not anywhere near competitive enough to
try it at the trot! :-)

If you're using syringes put duct tape on the end, I would not use the
"caps" that come with the syringe because, as mentioned, you lose them right
away.
Or, if you're like me, you grab the syringe on the trail, plunge the end
into your horses mouth, squeeze the elytes in, and then immediately have a
panic attack because you can't remember if you took that damn cap off or
not!! You start wondering what happens to a horse that swallows a plastic
syringe cap, and how exactly you are going to explain it to the vet.
And then you have to search around on the ground while your horse dances
around you screaming at his buddies who are leaving him, then you look in
the saddle bag and finally find the cap down at the bottom where it fell off
anyway. :)
