[RC] Ulcers/USA druggies? - rides2far
Mike,
You misunderstand where my concern lies. There's no shame in recognizing that your horse has an ulcer and treating it. That's good horsemanship. 5 years on the track is a LONG time. None of ours went back over twice. I'd say a huge majority of "ex-racehorses" were on the track 90 days and didn't make the grade. My concern is for it to become sort of "standard preventative maintenance" to give ulcer medication to horses who are campaigned hard. I hadn't thought of Roger's angle that it's an acid blocker. That's kinda over my head, but I just don't like the idea of ulcers being something we expect and consider natural. But if they occur, you certainly want to know about it and react accordingly. I can't imagine witholding food or water before or after a ride though and would be surprised that an old Ride & Tier would consider it.
I'd also like to clarify on the problem I have with someone insinuating that the "USA's horsemen have been abusing drugs". COUNTRIES do not break rules or cheat. People do. My gripe is not that another country doesn't get accused. It's that any COUNTRY should be singled out. If someone has proof against a person, name them. But how can you say a COUNTRY does it? The USA is a rich country, but we don't necessarily have rich riders. I'm sure there's a very wide variety of types and levels of riders in different countries all over the world. If there's a bad apple somewhere let's not blame every rider in their country for having the same practices.
Angie (waiting for the 2:15 bell with my loaded truck in the teacher's parking lot. Longstreet forecast...scattered thundershowers heavy at times this evening & morn. but AM clearing???? :-/
