Re: [RC] Equine dental care - DESERTRYDR1
We just had Sarah Metcalf, DVM, Equine Dental Specialist and Endurance Ride
manager come out about 10 days ago. She spent approximately an hour per
horse. Some needed a fair amount of work, including my Anglo-Arab mare, who
just had $90. worth of work done about 6 months ago. She moved fairly fast,
but did a very thorough job, including explaining to the owners exactly what
was going on in each horse's mouth.
I would not necessarily want a non-DVM to work in my horse's mouth. The last
VET that did work (the $90. worth) gouged my horse's mouth rather severely
so she started bleeding and he couldn't finish the job. Non-DVM's at least
in Washington State cannot administer medications legally, and I don't know
how many horses would allow that kind of work without them.
Sorry, can't give you the name of a DVM Dental Specialist, but I sure
recommend using one instead of a general equine vet or a non-DVM. My horse
has had a noticeable difference in her behavior in the bridle.
jeri (and Fog, who really didn't like those needles AT ALL)
