Re: Feeding/hay suggestions
Well, if you've been reading ridecamp at any length of time
at all, you have of course considered beet pulp? I just
started my TWH on it and he loved it from the start, no "What
the heck is THAT?!?!" reaction at all. I had been giving him
Triple Crown chopped grass forage, but he was not crazy about
it, hence the switch to beet-pulp. I'm fazing out the chop and
fazing in the beet-pulp. I plan to give him all the beet-pulp
he'll eat in the time alloted (about 40 minutes: I feed him on
my way to work).
You could also try the Triple Crown chopped forage. I got it
at Southern States. Costs $12/50 lb bag (a bag of beet pulp
costs about the same). The chopped forage can be be dusty, so
I wet it. Big advantage is consistant quality (nutritional
data is on the bag), sometimes hard to get with local hay. A
50 lb bag lasted me about 2 weeks when I was feeding it
exclusively, but Cy was on decent pasture at the time. Triple
Crown makes alfalfa, grass+alfalfa, and straight grass chopped
forage mixes- I fed just the grass mix. I would have stuck with
it but Cy would not finish it, and I got tired of pitching left-
overs out, so I am switching to the beet pulp which, so far, he
snarfs down.
If you want the gory details of my feeding regime: Cy is now on
pasture that is chewed pretty bare, and gets hay, but he's in
with a herd of 20+ horses, so I am not sure how much hay he
ends up getting, so I give him about 2 lb sweet feed (10%
protein), chopped forage (started with about 4 lbs, down to
less than 1 lb now), beet pulp (4 qt measures dry), about 1 cup
corn oil and 1 oz Mega Mag supplement, all mixed and soaked in
1 gal hot water. He gets this in the AM only (boarding
siutation is less than ideal, not feasible to feed in PM but he
does get hay in the PM).
Hope this helps
