TENS unit
Several people have asked me what a TENS unit is. Heck, I don't even know
what it stands for. If you do a internet search on "TENS unit" you can go
to a site that sells them. They look about like a beeper, and have
electrodes. I believe they send electrical impulses of various lengths
through the body between the electrodes. They're advertised as being
used for relief from pain, nothing else. I know a woman who had one to
use for her arm, she has Lupus. On the same sites that sell TENS they
have the EMS (that Karen mentioned) I don't know the difference.
I remember a long time ago when a guy who was an inventor was a guest on
Johnny Carson occasionally. Johnny asked him what he'd done lately and
he told him a story about how a friend of his who worked construction had
broken a bone in his hand and couldn't hammer. He'd asked for help and
this guy had come up with a way to send a low level electrical impulse
through the hand and it had cut the healing time in half. Don't know if
this was a descendent of that or not.
I'd still like to get one but the web site says you need a prescription.
They're actually made in Chattanooga (where I live) and I called the
manufacturer. They were rather skeptical as to whether it would be useful
on something as large as a horse and really didn't know anything about
people using them on horses. I'd still like to get one. The one I
looked up yesterday was $79.20 For that amount I don't think it would be
worth the trouble to rent one, just buy it. It would be illegal to use
*during* a ride, like at vet checks, but fine at home.
