I always use this test: Would it kill or hurt a horse in the wild to do
something if a predator was about to see if that horse would like to become
lunch?
Of course in the wild a horse wouldn't be eating just two meals a day, but
even so, even if a horse's stomach was stuffed full of goodies it had just
came across, if a wolf pack was about to attack that horse better be able
to run off as far as it needs to without colicking or it'll become lunch
anyway.
That's also how I came to decide that so much mare PMS stuff is learned
behavior rather than physiological - I just don't see a mare acting stupid,
refusing to save herself from the mountain lion because she's in heat, or
about to be, or just out, or whatever.
