Here's how I did it.  Convince your husband that you will be a much saner, happier and fulfilled person if you can just ride your horse on short endurance rides (you have to work them into this slowly).  Start him out with something like an LD ride or a Novice CTR.  Let him see how happy this makes you.  Work in the idea of a 50 miler slowly, so that he hardly notices.  In the mean time make sure that your happy demeanor makes HIM happy (if you get my drift).  Before you know it, you'll have him happily crewing the Tevis for you.
