I think a lot of people read a book, like the theory,
and think they can just go out and do it.  You see
this in training as well as health and management.

If he really liked the idea of keeping his horses
unshod, he should find local people who are doing it
right and learn from the best he can find.

Like anything, theory and practice (and a large dose
of common sense)must work together.
