Dynamite at Tevis (from Barb Peck)

Barb Peck bpeck@together.net
Hi group:
Deficiencies in soils (and consequently hay) vary widely
from the West to the East.
So, when choosing a supplement, it's a good idea to have
a mineral profile done on your main source of hay, then go from
there.
Most companies vary their micro-mineral amounts/pound
depending of what needs to be balanced for various rations.
More than just the Calcium:Phosporus ratios should be looked at.
The micro minerals should be in specific ratio to each other also,
AND there are different absorption rates (also called bioavailability)
for the different forms of the element (for example, copper sulfate is 95%
bioavailable, while copper oxide is much lower).

In Vermont, our hays are very deficient in copper (and selenium)
and high in iron and manganese. And alot of hay growers balance
their fertilizers for dairy cows, and not horses.
Moormans (out of Ohio) makes some excellent salt based
supplmenets (as does Dynamite).
You just need to figure out what you need and don't need.
   Barb
