horse hauling questions

How does one go about the arduous task of finding a competent (at 
minimum) and reputable horse hauler?!  We found a gelding that my 
fiance likes; the gelding is in the Chicago suburbs, and we will be 
moving to Camas, WA from Portland, OR (just across the river).  Do we 
find one based around where we live or over in Chicago?  What are 
typical rates/charges?  I've heard a figure of $0.50 per mile before, 
but didn't know if that was dated information or not.  OK, you 
experts out there - enlighten us!  We want to know what to look out 
for, questions to ask, etc., that is, *after* we get a Chicago area 
vet to do the pre-purchase exam!
