Jolynn -
Are you using a crupper? When a ride has significant up & down we see a
lot of what I call "scrubby armpits" from the saddle shifting forward
behind the elbow on the downhill. This will cause just what you
describe with angry skin in the armpits. The looser girth is great
until you need to keep the saddle back in place, and then sometimes a
crupper is needed.
