Self Waterers/ Cold Climate

Hi
With the many various brands of self waterers is there one better than the 
other?  I was thinking of the kind that the horse has to push the float to 
get water, is that hard for them to learn?  Is that a better method than 
the auto fill ones?  Please give me some advice from experience.
