Re: Fwd: RE: Fwd: RC: Re: Gauteng 100 Miler Live on the Internet
Hi Hope
There are no elephants at this venue it is mainly a lion and rhino reserve,
with many antelope species, ostriches , hippo's and I heard that giraffes
have been added recently.
Our horses do not have any special training, most of us train on good old
farm land and sand roads, many horses never see cows or donkeys other than
at rides and they most definitely do not grow up with the wild animals :-)
other than snakes and field mice perhaps :-). I guess us endurance riders
are just plain dumb enough to load our horses into the trailer and pitch at
the ride :-), my mare has seen a bush and a kudu (antelope type) at another
ride that we do in a game reserve, and well, we slammed on brakes for the
pig and she wouldn't budge until the pig ran off and well the kudu did help
us do that leg in our fastest time ever :-) as she took off like a bat out
of hell when it jumped across the path behind us!!!! <vbg> strangely enough
she didn't worry at all about the baboons leaping across the trail near the
finish, although I don't know if the fact that it WAS the finish was the
reason :-).
The lions are in a large separate enclosure to the rest of the reserve but
yes we do ride through the hippo's, rhino's etc.
