RE: Re: Re: Horse Behavior, First Loop
Hunting.... HA! Had a chance to go, but couldn't get into the idea
of wearing my tall hunt boots (way back of my closet), using regular
stirrup irons and my flat saddle. Don't have an appropriate hunt
coat and hunt cap. Can't wear my favorite T-shirt. What can I say?
Should be a good experience for a horse, but I bet you will still
have the same problems on the hunt that you will have on the ride.
They do have a hunt occasionally where I used to board, but all the
horses on the ranch become maniacs when they are out. But you're
right - if you and the horse could learn control on a hunt, you
are well prepared for an endurance ride.

I've just picked up on this thread, because I'm way, way behind in my
mail.
If I'm repeating a prior suggestion, I apologise.
For those guys who battle with their horses in the first loop....have
you
tried hunting? Sometimes, with an over the top horse, a season's
hunting is
all that is required to settle a youngster. If you're worried about the
jumps, you can ride at the back with the hack.
If you tell the huntmaster that you or your horse is a novice, he'll
very
often excuse any naughty behaviour, and peopel will look out for you.
Not that I've been brave enough to try this with Toc, mind...
