Character Counts!
I met the Cowman in '87 at
the WS 60. Boy was that a fun time. The race started in the
afternoon and everyone toasted with Champagne and good food before for hours
before departure! There was this cool guy in camp who stood about 10 ft.
tall, wore a big grizzly beard and had steer horns growing from his head.
After a few glasses of champagne, I got the nerve to go and meet him. I
was a little intimidated by his presence, but he was the kindest, coolest
and wisest gentle giant. As we got to talking and somehow got onto the
subject of back pain (which I was experiencing), he invited me over to his camp
area and to my surprise he had a masseuse table. I climbed up on to that
table and got the best damn full body massage complete with back adjustment, all
the while lying under the canopy of the giant pines and in the presence of a
good man willing to help a sorry ass rider! Of course there was no
charge, but he did help me saddle up and get going on the trail, since I was in
the twilight zone after such royal treatment. Oh yeah... the ride was
beautiful, the camaraderie was loving and that it laid the foundation for my
successful Tevis finish three weeks later! Great
memories.
