Re: RC: horse temp
HI - well under AERC VET guide lines - a vet COULD pull you for a
rectal temp of 103F. ( with other issues)
A temp of 105F is a major concern over that the
horse internal core temp may be 107 or higher - could die .
Susan will fill us in on that point.
I found this real cool low cost $12 TALKING temp unit at walmart drug
section. It is accurate enough easy to use and I checked it with the
std glass merc thermometer .. close enough to trust it. - after
you start it it tells you the temp in one minute - as well as shows it
on the digital display
ALSO a GREAT gag - as in 'hey, that horse is talking out of his a... -
so does his rider..." O:)
I carry it on hot condx rides and do run a check ..
AS well as the do-it-yourself under the saddle gauge I have suggested
many time - see archives ...
I really try to keep rectal temps under 104f - EXCEPT during the SHORT
HOT fast speed works -- but I make sure I end up at a water source to
cool them off fast.
The highest I had one time was 105 - scared the
crap out of me - she would not recover in HR or Resp for about 20-30
minutes.. - I had only 5 gal of water in the trailer.. Walked for
over an hour in the shade and woods to get her recovered. We ran about
5 miles in 1 mile sprints with HR over 180 to max hr .. was a bit too much for
the day .
