It's for real. The prevalence of melanoma in greys (rendering the carcass useless for human consumption) is sufficiently high that most slaughter plants will not pay for grey horses until after slaughter, and will not pay for them at all if they have internal melanomas. Greys are real money losers for them, and the profit-and-loss statement is as important to them as it is any other business with a high overhead and a narrow profit margin.
