RE: Owyhee High Country
Hi Linda - Owyhee county is in the SW corner of Idaho. The ride is south of
the Snake River, on the east side of the Owyhee Mtns. Large county, very few
people. It's pretty remote and 'wild west'. A large portion of it (including
our place) was on Clinton's National Monument list - some incredible
country. Didn't happen though. (probably after Babbitt's visit they figured
they'd need the Nat'l Guard to protect gov't employees from the locals :)
Idaho is still fairly unpopulated - I think it's 65% public land - FS, BLM,
Wilderness. Ranges from close to sea-level (Hell's Canyon - Snake River) to
12,000 foot mountains. Still a lot of gun-totin' anti-government renegades
left in this state... Ruby Ridge, Claude Dallas ...
I love it!
Steph

Steph, where is Owyhee High Country? I'm looking at my map of
Idaho and I don't see it anywhere. (Lots of great names
though, to conjure up wonderful images: "Nez Perce National Forest,"
"River of No Return Wilderness Area," "Bitterroot Wilderness,"
"Tin Can Flat," "Gospel Hump Wilderness.")
Is this the same area where people were afraid that Clinton/Babbitt
were going to declare a National Monument? The area Babbitt
helicoptered out to and had some kind of perfunctory public
meeting? Did this ever happen?
