Wish I knew the answer.  I thought it was a generator.  It looks like one and 
works like one.  I just turn the key and it starts and pumps out electricity 
just like my little Honda 650 generator.  This one is about 3500 I think and 
is called an invertor.  It runs on plain gas and is square and sits in the 
back tack compartment of the horse trailer.

Okay I have it now I think.  My roommate says an invertor generates DC power 
and converts it to AC which takes less energy and it quieter.  A generator 
generates AC power.  Does that make sense????
