They can go dead lame, because very often the stone bruise will escalate
into an abscess deep inside the hoof.  it is excruciatingly painful to the
horse.  I would call in my vet and have him excise it.  This will make a
hole in the sole of the hoof.  You pack it with cotton soaked in 7% iodine
solution or a gob of ichthamol and bandage it to keep it clean.  Wrap the
whole foot with Vetwrap and change the dressing every couple of days.  It
helps to install an EZ boot over the bandage to keep it from coming off.  It
takes a fair amount of time for the hole to fill in, but it's what must be
done.
