Karen sort of did the same thing... Her horses were shod, not barefooted -
and she cut her heelstraps out of the boots. But indeed she was kind enough
to advise me on this before I tried it. The boots stay on because the foam
is an adhesive. It sticks to the inside of your e-boots and the horse's
hoof, as well as your shoes, horse's legs, cuticles, etc. :-) It's a 2
part mixture - both are liquid - when mixed together they make a liquid that
turns into a foam that bubbles up and hardens into a flexible liner that
feels like foam rubber.

To the person asking how I keep from getting foam everywhere: I stand there
with a plastic spoon and quickly scrape off any foam that comes up over the
tops of the boots and keep wiping off the foam onto a rag.

Also I am using about 1/6 of a bottle of each liquid per hoof but likely
need less - next time I'll try 1/8 for a size 0 e-boot. Before you open the
bottles take a ruler, and make some tick marks on the bottle dividing it
into however applications you need so you know how much to pour each time.
It makes measuring MUCH easier. I may even put the two substances into two
dosing syringes so I can measure them out more accurately when mixing...

I have not tried foaming over a vetwrapped hoof, I expect it to not stick
well if I use it that way. I have tried vetwrapping the coronet w/o cutting
the top of the boot down. I thought I could just remove the vetwrap after
and not have the foam at the coronet, but it solidified and I could not
remove the foam or vetwrap in places. It was a mess. Hence my idea of
trimming down the tops of my boots all around... That will give me some
extra space between the boots and the coronet to keep overflow from making a
mess.

Cheers -
