Why can't you lunge the horse in a big circle?  Does
he not show as well?  Is this even permitted?

Longing is permitted, however, you must be careful.  Some vets do not allow you to encourage your horse by swinging the end of the line at the horse.  Unless your horse is really well trained, he may look very reluctant.  I have seen Lari Shea's horse longed for BC and they looked great.  If your horse is well trained and will show well, it is a good way to do it.
