Re: RC: Finding the right bit
Great post!!! Now you've gone and let the "secret"
out...LOL..
It amazes me that alot of people disregard the
training in favor of the "right bit". Funny how
quickly the "right bit" over time becomes the "wrong
bit". Any horse can learn to carry a bit aslong as its
not too fat or big for that horses mouth. It's the
training that makes the bit successful.
I see alot of your training methods have been
borrowed from John Lyons. I too incoorporate JL into
my training program and have yet to be dissapointed.
You are absolutly right in saying there is no excuse
for a badly behaved horse. Everyone owes it to
themselves, their horses and the unsuspecting people
who will be around your horses,to take the time and do
the training.
On the cue to lower your horses head while
mounted, I have an alternate suggestion for the "cue"
on the bitted horse. Instead of see sawing just pick
straight up on one rein. For me its easier and quicker
than the see saw. Remember when teaching this cue,
watch the tip of the ears, as soon as it lowers one
tinsey bit reward your horse by releasing the cue. If
at first your horse raises his head keep applying the
cue til the ear lowers even if it is still higher than
when you first used the cue. Reward, then ask again.
